IoT-based Automatic Brightness and Soil Moisture Control System for Gerbera Smart Greenhouse

The automatic brightness and soil moisture control system for gerbera smart greenhouse based on internet of thing (IoT) is presented. The automatic brightness control system was designed to detects ambient brightness with a BH1750 sensor. Then, it automatically controls the LED lamps to illuminate an appropriate range for gerbera growth that is between 3000 - 5000 lux. Meanwhile, the automatic soil moisture controller is dedicated to monitoring soil moisture with a fork-type sensor and automatically turns on or off water sprayer when the soil moisture value is lower or higher than the specified value (70 - 80%). Furthermore, the presented system fully operates with an ESP8266 microcontroller integrated with IoT via ISM 2.4GHz wireless communication. The Blynk application is a smart convenient tool that not only graphically displays greenhouse’s data but is also capable of controlling several values of the greenhouse at any time and everywhere. All the greenhouse’s data is real-time online storage via Google sheets for further analysis. From the experimental results, the proposed system works automatically in brightness and soil moisture controlled by only 5.6% of average errors. The water sprayer control system was correctly self-acting turns on and off with respect to demanded values. Also, the greenhouse’s data are automatically stored once an hour on Google sheet based IoT. Additionally, the proposed system is suitable for increasing the convenience of gerbera growers as well as effective scale-up for the huge demand for smart farms.
