Multi-UAV Interception Inspired by Harris’ Hawks Cooperative Hunting Behavior

This paper presents an approach to intercept adversarial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) by using Harris’ hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus) cooperative hunting behavior. A simplified UAV guidance model is introduced to reduce mathematical complexity, but still capture the important behavior of these unmanned aircrafts. A mixed guidance law suited to the Harris’ hawks natural hunting style at high-speed is adopted for the leader UAV to intercept target UAV with good maneuverability and horizontal turning escape tactic. The follower UAVs use Markov decision process to help the leader UAV rounded up their targets. The "flush-and-ambush" strategy and "relay attack" strategy of Harris’ hawks used in cooperative hunting are introduced for multiple UAVs interception in order to increase the probability of success. Simulation results demonstrate availability and effectiveness of the interception approach.
