Main patterns and stylized facts of CSR of Spanish companies focused on Sustainability

Today's society requires companies not only to make profits, pay taxes and create jobs, but also to broaden the dimension of demands in line with sustainable development and the improvement of society in general. In this context, Corporate Social Responsibility is a fundamental strategic tool to be applied by companies. In the following paper we have defended the hypothesis that socially responsible companies are also economically more profitable. For this purpose, the Ibex 35 companies have been chosen as a sample, and they have been divided between socially responsible companies and others that are not, using as a criterion whether or not they belong to stock market indexes related to sustainability. Some economic ratios have been studied between both types of companies in 2018 and 2019, dividing the companies by sector and considering the entire sample. The results obtained show that there is a certain tendency for the hypothesis that socially responsible companies are more profitable to be fulfilled, but the differences are not statistically significant enough to affirm this categorically. However, in any case, it has been shown that socially responsible companies are at least as profitable as those that are not and, therefore, for the same economic profitability, companies should adopt strategies related to Corporate Social Responsibility.
