Research on Partial Discharge Characteristics and Type Identification of Typical Insulation Defects of 10kV XLPE Cables

Partial discharge (PD) in cable is considered as one of the main causes of cable insulation deterioration. In this paper, three defect models based on typical defects existing in XLPE cables in AC and DC transmission system were designed in laboratory and experimental data was obtained in order to investigate the partial charge characteristics of XLPE cables defects. Then based on experimental results, some typical parameters were proposed to realize the fault type identification of cable defects based on BP neural network. Test results indicate that the maximum value and the distribution of PD are different for there are some differences existing in areas and internal electric field distortion of cable defects. Besides, the verification test shows that three defects can be distinguished correctly through employing the fault identification method based on BP neural network in this paper, which indicates that this method can be used in identifying fault types of cable defects in future research.
