Load Regulation Potential Model for Data Centers

Under the background of energy transition, new energy will achieve leapfrog development, and the high penetration of renewable energies in power grid will bring great challenges to the safe and stable operation of power system. Demand response (DR) is an important means to solve the above problem. As typical high energy consumption loads, data centers are demand response resources with both temporal and spatial load regulation potential. This paper quantifies the load regulation capacity of data centers. Firstly, the power consumption model of data centers is established and the constraints associated with various load regulation methods are proposed. Secondly, the load regulation potential model of data centers is built to calculate the load cutting capacity and load increasing capacity. Finally, a case study is set to analyze the influence of arriving workloads on the load regulation potential of data centers. The results can provide a theoretical basis for incorporating data centers into power grid operation.
