A Low-Cost Real-Time Monitoring System for the River Level in Wasit Province

The Tigris and Euphrates rivers, as well as their branches, are the lifeblood of Iraq, with most of the country’s cities and villages constructed along their banks. Water in rivers is used for drinking, watering and other purposes. However, the height of the water in the rivers is continually changing. This alteration of altitude in the water is affecting the nearby environment. Thus, controlling the water level after the dams and the ratio of water among Iraqi cities has been a challenging problem for the government departments that are concerned with this aspect. They depend on manual and traditional methods to check the altitude of water once every day. In this paper, we present a real time monitoring system for measuring the water levels of the river. A microprocessor and an ultrasonic sensor are the main components of the system, which track the water level in real-time and relay data via GPRS technology. Based on the test results, this system has an accuracy rate of 96.84%.
