PMU-based Estimation of Generator Synchronous Parameters through Simulated and Real-Field Synchrophasor Data

Synchronized phasor measurements promote full-scale monitoring of electric power system operation. Synchrophasor-based algorithms can improve the response of control equipment along with enabling new approaches to power system management in near real-time. One of the promising synchrophasor applications is estimating “true” parameters of a synchronous generator, the most important power system component. The conducted analysis is mostly based on standard concepts of electric circuit theory as well as mathematical models for electrical machines and power system transients. This paper presents methods aimed at turbo- and hydrogenator parameter estimation through synchrophasor measurements taken in a power system steady state. Experiments were carried out with both simulated and real-field phasor measurements data. All described case studies have been implemented in the MATLAB software. A linear regression-based model for a turbogenerator turned out a success. Simulation results for a hydrogenerator can also be deemed accurate enough. The conducted analysis can be considered as a first step towards implementing synchrophasor-driven parameter estimation methods at power plants.
