Totally Enclosed Water Cooled (IC 71W) Motors for API 541

Well-designed totally enclosed water cooled (TEWC, IC 71W) motors provide considerably more power density and lower noise operation than other traditional totally enclosed motor types. API 541 does not allow for the use of TEWC motors. The intent of this paper is to show that TEWC motors should be added to the API 541 standard as an acceptable enclosure. This paper compares TEWC motors to totally enclosed designs allowed by API 541 and details how TEWC motors can be designed to meet the API 541 standard, which includes a 25-year service life requirement.
