Attitude Control Of Spinning Projectile With Single Moving Mass

A single moving mass is used to realize the attitude control of the spinning projectile due to its advantages in maintaining a good aerodynamic configuration for the projectile, avoiding ablation of the rudder surfaces, and simplifying the control system structure, and so on. In this paper, a moving mass control system is designed with the pitch PID controller, yaw PID controller, and sinusoidal modulator, which generates the corresponding movement command of the moving mass with outputs of the pitch and yaw controllers based on a sinusoidal modulation mode. The moving mass follows the commands and moves along the radial direction on a straight rail fixed to the projectile. The desired periodic average maneuvering moment can be produced. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that it is feasible and effective to utilize a single moving mass for attitude control of spinning projectiles.
