Compact and Wideband dual-ring Slot Antenna for Biomedical Applications

This communication describes a tiny slot antenna with broad characteristics for implantable applications in the ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna is 10 mm x 10mm x 0.4 mm. This antenna is very thin and compact; thus, it makes it suitable for implantable applications. The proposed antenna has bandwidth of 2.6 GHz (145%) in a single layer muscle at 2.8 GHz resonating frequency. And bandwidth of 0.75 GHz (35.3 %) is observed in a multilayer human tissue resonating at 2.2 GHz frequency. Thus, due to wideband characteristics this implantable antenna will be able to provide good SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) even in the harsh and noisy environment inside the human body. The SAR (specific absorption rate) analysis of the proposed antenna has also been carried out and SAR is found to be low. Due to low SAR by the antenna, it will have very low or negligible effects on human tissues inside the body. Hence, this proposed antenna can be utilized to communicate various body parameters like glucose level, creatinine level, ocular pressure, blood pressure etc. if it is integrated with appropriate biosensors.
