A multi-wide-band Planar 4-element MIMO Antenna System for WLAN Applications

The design, fabrication and characterization of a 4-element multi-wideband multiple-input- multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system covering multiple bands between 1.2-7.9GHz with bandwidths ranging from 800–2100 MHz and high isolation is presented. The covered bands can be used in WLAN standards. The antenna is based on an elliptical monopole radiating element, with two square parasitic elements added to improve the bandwidth and matching. A 2×2 MIMO configuration is designed to improve the system capacity of the communication system while maintaining the ground connectivity. High port isolation is achieved via the creating of a slot in the GND plane as well as creating two strip connections, providing high isolation between the elements while the distance between the 4 MIMO elements is minimized. The measured gain of each element was 3dBi. The measured efficiencies of the elements were with an average of 80% with envelope correlation coefficient values lower than 0.012. Simulation and measurement results were in good agreement.
