Design and Performance of a Slot Based Implantable Antenna in 2.45 GHz ISM Band

In this particular work, an implantable antenna operating in 2.45 GHz ISM band has been proposed. This antenna has been developed based on different types of slot structures such as meander-line slot, complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) slot, hash slot, and thin rectangular slot on the patch along with an open slot on the ground plane. The proposed patch antenna is positioned within a skin phantom having dimensions of 100mm × 100mm × 100mm. A superstrate is placed on the conducting patch to avoid direct contact with the skin tissue. The overall area of the proposed antenna including superstrate is 150mm

with a volume of 239.1mm

. Copper is used here to design the patch and ground plane whereas Arlon AD 430 is used as the superstrate and substrate material. This whole structure is simulated using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio 2017. This antenna is tuned at 2.49 GHz and is capable of radiating over a bandwidth of 200 MHz between 2.36 GHz and 2.56 GHz. Realized gain of this antenna is −16.4 dBi at the resonant frequency.
