Performance Evaluation of Single Point Turning Tool using Condition Monitoring and NI-DAQ

Monitoring the status of cutting tools in any machining operation is a key element to avoid unexpected machining trouble. Breakdowns and instabilities in machining processes and tool peripheries may be detrimental to efficacy, therefore, it becomes crucial to investigate the real-time condition of the tool to improve the efficiency of the overall process. The present work demonstrates the use of vibration signature analysis, adopting National Instruments Data Acquisition System (NI-DAQ). The vibration signals shall be monitored and used to establish a real time relationship between monitoring and the performance evaluation of single point tool. The acquired vibration signals were visualized and analyzed to correlate the power spectrum values with tool wear of the tool for EN-31 workpiece. Further, it was observed that with an increment in depth of cut from 0.25 mm to 2 mm, the power spectrum values first decreases then increase until the tool wear reaches to 300 μm.
