Electro-Mechanical Performance Analysis of Force and Stress in Automotive Connecting Rod

The main objective of this study was to perform static as well as fatigue analysis of the Maruti Suzuki Eeco engine connecting rod. This study was divided into two steps, first, analysis of various forces acting on the connecting rod and, second, static and fatigue analysis followed by design optimization of connecting rod.In the first part of this analysis, inertia force and gas pressure force experienced by the connecting rod was evaluated at given engine speed. Inertia force which is the combination of primary force and secondary force was modeled in MS Excel sheet at different crank angles. Gas pressure force based on thermodynamics model was also included in this sheet. Further these loads were applied on connecting rod with Finite Element Methods. 3-D model of component was prepared in SolidWorks and then imported to ANSYS. Finite Element Analysis was carried out for two different materials of connecting rod under same boundary conditions. The results of this analysis indicated that maximum stress was found to occur at fillet sections of connecting rod for both materials. So, design modification was required at these sections.
