Long-Range Wireless Sensor Network-based Remote Marine Environmental Monitoring System

A healthy marine environment plays a vital role in the sustainable development of the marine economy. To monitor the health of the marine environment, a remote marine environmental monitoring system based on the long-range (LoRa) sensor network and the 5th generation wireless communication (5G) is designed. The offshore nodes use the LoRa technology to realize a low-power ad-hoc network, and the gateways use 5G technology to realize the remote data transmission. The system collects the monitoring data in real-time and uploads it to the management center server, which then analyzes and processes the data and releases it on the webserver. The system has been tested onsite. The reliable communication range of nodes can reach 4 km, and the operation life of nodes is more than three months, while the packet loss rate is 1.46% during continuous operation. The system realizes the remote sea data acquisition, processing, and releasing with low power consumption, and the data transmission process is stable and safe.
