Rapid prototyping tools for power electronic systems-demonstration with shunt active power filters

This paper presents three new rapid prototyping tools developed at the institute. The effectiveness of these tools is demonstrated by designing a shunt active power filter in a very short time. First, a DSP model to execute complex control algorithms has been created for the simulation program PSpice simulating the discrete behavior of digital control circuits. The control algorithms in the DSP model can be implemented in C-code. Secondly, the control C-code can be downloaded to the ISEADSP for real-time execution. The ISEADSP is a universal DSP control board based on 80 MFLOP SHARC processors which can perform control algorithms of various nature and highest complexity. Thirdly, power electronic building blocks (PEBBs) were developed to build and analyze quickly different converter topologies. Together, these three rapid prototyping tools decrease the development time of power electronic applications enormously.
