Comparative Study of Multi-Stage Boost Converter for High Voltage and High Power Applications

In this paper two different topologies of boost converter are compared. These converters can be coupled with renewable energy systems like PV, fuel cells, electric vehicles due to high step up voltages. These boost converter can be used for high voltage and high power applications. Since both converter use high frequency transformer, hence can be used in grid tied systems or mostly high power applications. These converters are multi-stage which leads to easy MOSFET selection and reduced size of filter components. Multi-stage converters are preferred over single stage converter as there is reduction in the current ratings of the switches, volume of the components as these are operated a very high switching frequency. Also the transformer size is less due to better utilization of transformer.
