Adaptive Protection Scheme for DC Microgrid to Avoid the False Tripping

An essential element of the DC microgrid is a converter and it is a static device that did not support under transient conditions due to lack of inertia. Thus the faults in DC microgrid require quick interruption compare to the traditional ac power system. In addition to this, there are other challenges in protecting the DC microgrids, like fault blinding and false tripping. These challenges are due to the variable and unpredictable natural resources. One of the most promising approaches for microgrid protection is adaptive protection. This paper majorly concentrates on false tripping and provides a solution to overcome this tripping with the help of adaptive protection schemes using communication protocols. The DC microgrid with the proposed algorithm is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink environment. Simulation results show the proposed method works satisfactorily in identifying fault in the DC microgrid.
