An Adaptive Control Algorithm for Seamless Mode Shifting Operation in Wind–Solar AC/DC Microgrid

The variability of renewable energy sources coupled with the unpredictable nature of the utility grid in developing economies, present interesting challenges for the effective operation of wind-solar based AC/DC microgrids. The challenges comprise of maintaining continuous power supply (CPS) for AC and DC loads irrespective of grid/renewable source availability, instilling seamless mode shifting (SMS) capability amidst varying system operating conditions, and safeguarding the wind turbine-generator configuration from grid disturbances. This paper aims to address the aforementioned challenges using an adaptive normalized least mean absolute third (NLMAT) algorithm-based coordinated control scheme for the power converters in AC/DC microgrid. The CPS and SMS capabilities are incorporated through the controlled functioning of solid-state transfer switches. Moreover, a doubly-fed induction generator used as a wind energy conversion system is integrated into the AC/DC microgrid in a manner such that, its operation is rendered immune against grid disturbances. Simulation results evidence the claims and demonstrate the satisfactory dynamic and steady-state performances at various mode shifting operations.
