Performance Enhancement of Induction Motor Drive by Modified Interleaved Inverter Configuration with Gradual Pole Changing Technique in EV Applications

This paper proposes a modified interleaved inverter (MII) configuration with smooth electronic pole changing (EPC) methodology for induction motor drive (IMD) in electrical vehicle (EV) applications. The EPC of IMD is popular as it improves drive performance by operating the same IMD in two modes i.e., high-pole mode and low-pole mode. These operating modes extends the range of speed-toque characteristics of drive which is the prime requirement of EV. However, the EPC technique has issue of poor performance especially in high-pole mode this is due to circulating currents. These circulating currents are attributable to common mode voltage (CMV) of the inverter. Apart from this IMD suffers with circulating currents during instantaneous EPC. This is due sudden change in phase angles of supply voltage that excites the winding of IMD. Furthermore, this results in flux distortion in the stator periphery, as it tries to change abruptly its nature. Thus, the drive performance deteriorated by creating an unforeseen torque and subsequent speed fluctuations. The proposed MII with gradual pole changing (GPC) approach ameliorates the above issues and improves the performance of EPC in IMD. The results of proposed MII with GPC mechanism for IMD is realized in ANSYS simulation environment.
