Integration of PHP-SPV-BES Based Renewable Energy Sources with Dual Mode Operation

This paper presents the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) to form a dual mode operating microgrid. Here, pico-hydro power (PHP), solar photo-voltaic (SPV) array based microgrid operating in grid-tied mode (GTM) and stand-alone mode(SAM) along with battery energy storage (BES) as power management entity is presented. Brushless DC generator (BLDCG) is used to generate power from the pico-hydro source and peak power from the variable PHP source is extracted using perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm. The SPV array is directly connected to DC bus for generating reference DC link voltage. The control of voltage source converter in both modes of operation is responsible for voltage regulation under perturbations and mitigation of power quality (PQ) issues. An improved second order generalized integrator frequency locked loop (I-SOGI-FLL) is used to generate the reference grid current under influence of DC offset and noise. The system performance is observed and tested in Matlab simulink platform and using hardware prototype in both steady state and dynamic state conditions.
