Termination of Maggots from Green Plant by Developed Microwave Source

In the present work termination of maggots from the night-blooming jasmine tree is carried out successfully by using the in-house developed microwave source. A commercially available magnetron is used to develop the Microwave-source for the generation of 1 kW microwave power at ∼2.45 GHz frequency. The prototype setup of microwave-source used for experiment consists of the components such as a magnetron, WR340 waveguide launcher, high voltage power supply, cooling fan, Isolator, directional coupler, microwave-load and horn antenna. Almost insects i.e. maggots are found extinct after the microwave treatment. The explosion of the microwave on the night jasmine tree is carried out for few minutes by double ridge guide horn antenna having high gain as well as low VSWR and almost caterpillars are found dead on the next day. A microwave works by passing radio waves at a frequency of 2.45 GHz through any insect. Microwaves at this frequency have an interesting property: they are absorbed by water and fats. When absorbed, the water or fat molecules start rotating due to the alternating nature of the electric fields of the microwave. This atomic motion is directly converted into energy which is given out as heat that destroys the insects. Thus, live testing of microwave treatment has been carried out successfully on maggots growing on the night-blooming jasmine tree and found very effective outcomes. This microwave power can also be used for medical, space, agriculture, defence and scientific-industrial applications.
