Stator Inter-Turn Fault Diagnosis by Motor Current Signature Approach

Induction machines are widespread workhorse of industries because of their toughness, smaller size, efficiency, low upkeep, and cost-effective performance. Condition monitoring of these motors is essential to avoid production shutdown, personnel injuries, and wastage of materials. Induction motors are subjected to a variety of environmental conditions in industries. During their lifetime, they need to expose themselves to different abnormal conditions. The safe and secure operations of the industries rely on the protection of these Induction motors. The abnormal condition may be due to accidental short circuit and/or the deterioration of organic insulation due to heat and aging. The focus of research in this paper lies in identifying the suitable methodology for stator inter-turn fault in induction machines. So these faults are created in real-time and the stator current signatures are taken for further analysis. Various signal processing techniques are effectively used in many engineering applications. Hence, in this paper, application of signal processing techniques on motor current signatures is also being taken up. This method can be effectively implemented for various types of faults to prevent shutdowns.
