Parallel Operation of IBCs for All Wheel Drive Electric Vehicles

This paper presents a scheme for charging the battery in All Wheel Drive (AWD) electric vehicles using the hardware inside the vehicle with minimum external components. In all wheel drive vehicles, there are two motors and two inverters. These are connected in parallel to develop a parallel combination of integrated battery charger (IBC) using split phase machine. IBC using split phase machine provides fast charging with unity power factor operation and zero instantaneous torque. The parallel connection of IBCs provides faster charging with higher power rating. Also by using the proposed configuration, the unbalance in grid currents, which is typical in IBCs, is reduced to a large extent.
