Optimum High Frequency Transformer Design using Iterative Algorithm and Validation of the Design by Finite Element Analysis Method

The complexity of electrical power grid is continuously increasing due to the usage of renewable energy distributed generation, roof top solar power, penetration of non-linear loads, electric vehicle charging and so on. The power grid is forced to become smart for balancing power flow and compensating power quality issues. The ongoing research has identified that transformers built with power electronic converters is suitable to meet the complex requirements of smart grid. This paper proposes Finite Element Analysis of the electrical and thermal stresses of a High Frequency Transformer, which is the major component of Solid-State Transformer (SST) developed to incorporate in smart grid environment. The finite element analysis is done on the optimum design output generated from an iterative algorithm developed by the same authors. Solidworks software is used for conducting finite element analysis and has established that the optimum design of high frequency transformer is safe and capable of withstanding electrical and thermal stresses.
