Combining Schwarz–Christoffel Mappings and Biot–Savart Law to Calculate the Clamping Plate Field in Large Salient Pole Synchronous Machines

A new calculation approach for the contribution of the stator end winding field to the clamping plate field in large synchronous machines based on Biot–Savart (BS) law and Schwarz–Christoffel (SC) mappings is proposed in this article. The new field calculation appeals due to its low computational cost in the range of hundreds of milliseconds. The field normal to the clamping plate as well as the tangential clamping plate flux is compared to magnetostatic 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) simulations for multiple operating points of a test generator geometry, with both calculation approaches being in good agreement.
