The ASP model for energy delivery information systems

This paper compares the conventional approach of implementing information systems and applications for energy delivery operations and the new model of utilizing these systems and applications via the Internet through application service providers (ASPs). The business case for implementing a global energy delivery information strategy in an integrated manner, in contrast to implementing one application at a time, has been well established at multiple utilities. However, the integrated implementation requires significantly higher upfront investments that, though economically justified, may not be affordable for many smaller utilities. The ASP model offers a viable alternative providing the same business benefits while requiring smaller initial capital investments. In this paper, the author explains the ASP model, particularly as it relates to energy delivery information systems and applications, the ASP business case, and implementation considerations through utility feasibility studies.
