A Survey: New Generation Artificial Intelligence and Its Application in Power System Dispatching and Operation

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology features convenient calculation, high discrimination efficiency and low dependence on physical mechanism. Thus, the New Generation of AI (NGAI) and its applications on power system operation becomes research hotspots. However, its inherent disadvantages such as poor interpretability and weak stability also restrict its application. In this paper, the applications of the NGAI technologies in different operation conditions, including load and renewable energy forecasting, fault diagnosis, online stability assessment, frequency/voltage optimal control and operation mode planning have been analyzed. Besides, the problems in the existing researches are summarized and the basic application methods of AI technologies are pointed out: condition-adapted, problem-conducted, scenario-based and application-oriented. Finally, the future applications of AI technologies in power systems are prospected.
