A Compact Low SAR Antenna AMC-Backed for WLAN/WBAN Applications

In this contribution, a new compact CPW-fed antenna with low SAR is designed for wireless body area network (WBAN) devices. It covers the Industrial, Science and Medical (ISM) band of 5.8 GHz. This proposed antenna is backed with an AMC reflector to enhance the gain and isolate the human body from unwanted electromagnetic radiations. To evaluate the antenna performance, the antenna system was placed on a flat phantom equivalent to the human body. The realized gain of the antenna system varies from 3.1 dBi to 10.28 dBi. In addition, the inclusion of the AMC reflector reduces considerably the SAR value to 0.115 w/kg, making the proposed antenna safe and suitable for use in WBAN applications.
