Flat Panel Interlaced Shared Aperture Antenna Array for LEO Ka-band High Throughput Satellite Communication Applications

This paper presents a compact, single layer shared aperture antenna array capable of serving LEO satellite communication. The shared aperture array presented here uses a triangular lattice to reduce grating lobes while allowing close tessellation of the receive and transmit elements. The array provides beamforming of
$-40^{\circ} < \theta < +40^{\circ}$
in all azimuth directions. Quadrature feeding is utilized in both the receive and transmit antenna elements to enable reconfigurable circular polarization. This work demonstrates a method to serve LEO satellite communication from a compact, single layer antenna array ideal for integration in vehicles, UAVs and backpacks.
