Implementation of DORT to a MIMO Radar with Planar Transmit and Receive Arrays

A multiple-input-multiple-output radar system is configured to detect the position of different point targets in a multi-path environment using decomposition of the time-reversal operator technique (DORT). The system includes ma network analyzer operating in stepped frequency mode as the transmitter and receiver for the S-band signals connected to a switch box for sequentially feeding and receiving the array elements. Vivaldi antennas are used in the array for high directivity and broadband performance. The antennas are arranged as a planar array so they can obtain both the azimuth and elevation angle of arrival of the signals from the scatterers. DORT method is applied to the data to obtain the excitation signals for array factor calculation to focus the array on each target and produce radar images of the scatterers. Using 4 transmit and 4 receive elements for the planar array arrangement is shown to selectively locate six radar targets in the room.
