HIS Based Low-Profile Double-Negative Metastructure for Millimeter-Wave Applications

Double split High Impedance Surface (HIS) based low-profile metastructure is presented in this paper. The metasurface comprised of slotted rectangular-shaped ring patches experiences the peak current value near the ‘magnetic resonance’, causing the HIS to resonate at 28 GHz where it exhibits negative effective permittivity and effective permeability. The compact 8.7 mm²unit cell is placed over Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate and analyzed numerically. Nicolson-Ross-Wier approach has been used to observe the effective permittivity and permeability of the unit cell. The design has been further tested with 1x2, 2x2 and 4x4 array formation to verify the results. Having a compact design and double-negative characteristics, this structure can be considered for use in millimeter-wave applications.
