A Dual-Band Millimeter-Wave Hybrid Dielectric Resonator Antenna for 5G Application

The fifth generation (5G) mobile network is required to provide the high data rate and low latency, in which millimeter wave technology becomes a key factor. In this scenario, a multi-band antenna that works in several millimeter wave bands at the same time is recommended to achieve a compact system. In this paper, a millimeter wave hybrid dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is proposed to realize the dual-band operation. Simulated results show that the antenna can cover two millimeter-wave frequency bands at 28 GHz and 39 GHz with the impedance bandwidths of 14.3% and 12.5%, respectively. It should be mentioned that the antenna element has a very compact cross-section dimension of 0.34$\lambda_{1} \times 0.36\lambda_{1} \times 0.1 \lambda_{1}$ ($\lambda_{1}$ means the free-space wavelength at 28GHz), which means it is able to show wide scanning angles in an antenna array formed by the proposed antenna element. This proposed hybrid DRA is hoped to be useful in the 5G millimeter wave applications.
