Influence of heat source location on heat dissipation performance of an underwater scientific instrument interface module

A single-point electromechanical (EM) cable subsurface mooring (EMC-SSM) is an observation platform used in measuring a variety of ocean parameters throughout the water column in real time. The scientific instrument interface module (SIIM) is a key component of the EMC-SSM, which provides electricity to the scientific instruments mounted on the EMCSSM. When a large number of instruments are installed on the EMC-SSM and working at the same time, the output power of the SIIM can be large, which leads to an increase in SIIM internal temperature and a decrease in reliability of the SIIM. In this paper, basic theoretical model on the internal space of the SIIM is proposed and Fluent software is used to make a study of the influences of heat source locations to temperature rises. The influence of vertical and horizontal coordinates on temperature rise and their curves in a helium-filled cylindrical space are obtained. It is found that the influence of vertical coordinate is greater than that of horizontal coordinate, but the influence of horizontal coordinate is more obvious when the heat source is close to the boundary. The heat source should be installed as close to the cavity wall as possible, and the narrow and appropriate length channel near the heat source is conducive to improving the heat dissipation performance. The evaluation method of optimum installation coordinates and specific optimum location are also given.
