Double Coupling IPT Systems for EV Charging Applications

This paper presents a new inWheel Inductive Power Transfer (inWIPT) system for electric vehicles (EV). The proposed inWIPT uses two magnetic couplers for the energy transfer between the off-board and on-board sides. The presence of a secondary coupler helps to mitigate the gap impact existent on conventional IPT systems, by adding another resonant compensation network. The typical series-series (SS) configuration for conventional IPT systems can assume a series-series-series (SSS) or other possible resonant combinations. A comparative analysis of the gain functions is carried out between the SSS and SSP (SS-parallel) to verify its feasibility to obtain a constant voltage/current charging modes for the EV battery pack.
