A Heuristic Approach for Optimizing Resource Allocation in D2D Underlaying Cellular Networks

Device to Device (D2D) Communication is consid-ered to be one of the future technologies of wireless communications, achieving low power consumption, high data rates and minimum delay for data exchange. However, operating in under-lay mode brings some challenges, mainly the mutual interference between cellular and D2D devices as well as between D2D devices themselves. In this paper, a D2D underlaying communication system in a cellular uplink network is considered, where multiple D2D devices can share the resources of a single cellular user. The main target is to maximize the overall rate of the system by using an optimized resource allocation (ORA) scheme. This scheme allocates the cellular resources to D2D devices according to their interference levels. It works by minimizing the power consumption of all D2D users, while maximizing the rate of the cellular users to guarantee a minimum quality of service (QoS). The results show that the proposed joint allocation many-to-one algorithm improves both system capacity and power consumption over one-to-one allocation.
