Design and Analysis of a 48V On-board Fast Charging System for Electric Vehicles

Global warming, pollution, and other environmental issues are becoming more and more acute. The environmental effects caused by transportation sectors are intensifying because of rising traffic congestion around the world. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more popular around the world. EVs are a promising technology for dramatically reducing the environmental stress of automotive transportation. EVs have the potential to reduce the use of fossil fuels, but obstacles such as limited range, charging time, and a shortage of charging stations have slowed their adoption. This paper presents a solution to the slow charging of electric vehicles by designing a 48V onboard fast charging system for EV that operates in the Constant Current-Constant Voltage (CC/CV) mode and charges the battery in around an hour. The designed charger may be plugged into any single-phase AC socket to charge the 48V lithium-ion battery used in the EVs. A full-bridge phase-shifted (FBPS) dc-dc converter for galvanic isolation and dc-dc conversion. The FBPS DC-DC converter is designed, and the model is then built, tested and investigated in MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results confirmed that the battery is being charged in CC-CV mode and the charger is able to charge the battery in one hour if 100 Ampere current is delivered to the 100Ah battery for one hour.
