Performance Comparison Of VSI Fed PMSM Drive With ZSI Fed PMSM Drive Using Different Modulation Schemes

Special Machines are gaining momentum in high performance drives. Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives are widely employed owing to its unique characteristics like high efficiency, better power factor, low inertia, superior power density and high torque to volume ratio. Conventional Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) fed PMSM drive with field Oriented Control (FOC) is employed for industrial drives. To integrate with renewable resources there are many recent inverter topologies. One such topology is the popular Impedance Source Inverter (ZSI). ZSI uses a combination of capacitors and inductors (Z-Source network) followed by conventional VSI. Because of its unique structure, ZSI reduces the line harmonics, increases reliability, improves power factor and extends the output voltage range. This paper attempts to analyse the closed loop performance of the conventional VSI fed PMSM drive and ZSI fed PMSM drive with classical FOC with different modulation schemes. The whole system is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results show that ZSI fed PMSM drive outperforms the VSI fed PMSM drive.
