An Enhanced STATCOM Model based on Hybrid Energy Storage System For SmartGrid

Modern day smart grids, employs huge power network with complex renewable energy sources (RES), hence voltage stability and power quality enhancement becomes a challenge. In recent years, with the improvement of semiconductor technology, Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) have proven substantial benefits in the power quality improvement of the system. However, obtaining dynamic real power control in traditional STATCOM is not possible. In this study, an unique modified STATCOM design with the use of a hybrid energy storage system is proposed (HESS). The HESS includes the combination of Battery energy storage system (BESS) and a super capacitor energy storage system with two bidirectional DC-DC converters. With the standard STATCOM and the Modified STATCOM/HESS integrated model, Matlab/Simulink is used to simulate the system's stability under three-phase fault circumstances. When the HESS was integrated with the STATCOM for power compensation and stability, simulation plots demonstrate that the system performance increased dramatically.
