Design and Analysis of a Compact CSRR Loaded Defected Ground Plane Antenna for Ultra-wideband Applications

In this paper, a miniaturized defected ground plane microstrip antenna for Ultra-wideband applications is presented. An array of four metamaterial unit cells of modified circular split ring resonator (CSRR) structures are added to the substrate side below the radiating patch for improving the antenna radiation characteristics. For further enhancing the antenna parameters, edge stair-case steps and edge truncation, in addition to metamaterial loading, have also been used in the presented design. A microstrip feed line of 10×1.9 mm

and FR4 is used as a substrate in the presented design. The proposed antenna has certain advantages like the compact size of 30.1×30.1 mm

, a high total gain of 5.03 dBi and an increased bandwidth of 9.04 GHz. The simulation and measured results are in fair agreement with each other, and results obtained for the proposed design show good radiation behavior within the UWB frequency range.
