Measurement and Analysis of Directional and Omnidirectional Noise in Deep Waters off Kochi

Underwater noise statistics is an important input for the design of SONAR. A directional noise measurement and recording unit has been designed and developed at NPOL for deployment in deep waters up to 400 m. In this paper, the noise statistics of the measured directional and omnidirectional noise at three stations in deep water off Kochi is presented. The variation in noise level spectrum at different locations is qualitatively studied as a function of the measured wind speed and observed marine traffic. Also, omnidirectional noise level spectrum at different depths has been compared with the standard Wenz curves.
