SAR Marginal Ice Zone Surface Roughness Visualization And Electromagnetic Interaction Investigation Based on Sea State Conditions

In this paper, sea-ice surface roughness has been modeled by a numerical method based on statistical properties of marginal ice zone (MIZ) in terms of energy balance computation under the sea state condition. The proposed visualization was carried out by processing of JONSWAP directional spectral formulation. Meanwhile, backscattering effects of MIZ from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) point of view is investigated. The results show that sea states including the wind speed and wind direction have direct impacts on the surface roughness, so that they can alter the electromagnetic properties and texture characteristics. Despite the limitations of different synthesis techniques, such as computational burden, dimensionality, complex formulation, non-coherent backscattering, and other variables that are hard to assess due to difficult access to the polar region, the proposed approach reduces the reliance on approximate formulations and empirical instructions.
