Highly Efficient Plasma Separation on Centrifugal Microfluidic Platform

With the increasing demand for rapid diagnosis of diseases, point of care testing has become a hot research topic. In the process of clinical diagnosis, blood separation is the first step of blood detection, and the separation efficiency directly affects the subsequent detection performance. In this article, an automated centrifugal microfluidic platform for blood separation was proposed. Different from the traditional separation structure based on curved separation channel leading out of bifurcation intersection. This platform is based on structure of multi-chambers and multi-microchannels, including a microchannel network composed of two collecting reservoirs close to each other (collinear with the connecting line of the center of the circle), a curved siphon microchannel and a branched microchannel for excess blood. Under the cooperation of the upper computer and the hardware instrument, plasma with high purity can be obtained and the process of separation can be achieved automatically and fast by simply clicking the button. Finally, plasma purity of 99% and plasma recovery rate of 32.5% are achieved in 50 seconds, which provides a new prospect for rapid, automatic and highly sensitive blood diagnostic applications in resource-limited areas.
