Reliability Data Collection Dot Std 3006.8: Framework for Establishing Goals for New Data

For many of today’s high availability facilities, equipment downtime comes with considerable financial and human consequences. Accurate and up-to-date data is essential for minimizing downtime, and optimizing operational costs. The US Army Corps of Engineers – Power Reliability Enhancement Program is updating its one-of-a-kind database of component failure and maintenance information. The current database is found in IEEE DOT Standard 3006.8. The database currently encompasses nearly 300 distinct component types including power generation, power distribution and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) items, including gas turbine generators, diesel engine generators, electrical switchgear, cables, circuit breakers, boilers, piping, valves, pumps, motors and chillers. This paper presents the goals for the upcoming data collection effort as well as the methodologies being employed to improve the quality and quantity of the final data set.
