An AFSS-based Multipattern Reconfigurable 5G Antenna

In this paper, a geared directional reconfigurable antenna is designed for application in the 5G band. The antenna is based on an active frequency selective surface (AFSS), surrounded by an octagonal screen of AFSS cells, which uses the frequency-selective properties of its band-stopped AFSS to suppress the antenna surface waves and to concentrate further the radiated energy of the antenna in a particular direction of radiation. The on-state of the diode controls each AFSS unit to switch from the on-state (high transmission) to the off-state (high reflection), activating the corresponding AFSS unit, minimizing interference, and optimizing the use of media, which can direct the antenna's radiation in the desired direction. The antenna has a 360° omni-directional pattern reconfigurability.
