Joint Optimization for Visible Light Communication and Positioning Based on Information Entropy

Visible light communication and positioning is one of the promising technologies that emerge in B5G/6G wireless communication, which can leverage the unlicensed bandwidth and the dominated line-of-sight link of visible light to achieve high system capacity and positioning accuracy. However, for visible light positioning, current literature mainly focuses on how to improve the localization accuracy based on given transmitter layout patterns. The relation between transmitter' s layout and positioning accuracy has been rarely studied. In this paper, we propose a new metric to evaluate the positioning accuracy based on information theory, namely entropy of positioning (EOP). This metric has certain convenience compared with traditional methods. Based on this metric, an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to find the optimum layout pattern for communication and positioning. The effectiveness of the algorithm is validated through simulations. It is found that the light emitting diodes concentrate in the middle of the room for communication-optimal scenario. While for positioning-optimal scenario, they should be placed at the corners of the room. A balanced solution is obtained to make a trade-off between those two extremes.
