Torque Ripple Reduction of Induction Motor using Discrete Sliding Mode Controlled Voltage Source Inverter

A torque ripple reduction technique of the induction motor is presented. Torque ripples are reduced not by direct control of the induction motor but by driving the induction motor using a controlled inverter. The voltage source inverter (VSI) is controlled using a discrete-time sliding mode controller (DSMC). A discrete sliding mode controller provides a fast dynamic response, good steady-state response, and robustness. An exponential bi-power reaching law is used here. First, a DSMC controlled inverter is implemented and later it is used to drive an induction motor. Using this DSMC controlled VSI to drive the induction motor, a considerable decrease in the torque ripple is obtained. Speed of induction motor is controlled by conventional V/f method.
