Design & Implementation of FM Transceiver using Raspberry Pi and SDR

A Software Defined Radio (SDR), uses software in a personal computer, or in an embedded system, to implement a major part of the signal processing. Modern wireless communication systems utilise this technology at a vast rate. This is because it can be set to any frequency band as well as carry out various modulation/demodulation strategies. In this paper, we have implemented the design to be able to work at any frequency, within the FM frequency band. We have also outlined the utilisation of SDR and Raspberry Pi as a single communication system; for the transmission and reception of signals in the FM frequency band. Components like amplifiers, modulators and demodulators are typically implemented in hardware; whereas in this case, they are implemented by using software in a Raspberry Pi FM (Frequency Modulation) Transmitter. This is done with the help of general purpose input output pins. Hence, it can be used in various fields like defence, civilian wireless communications, among others. We make use of several toolboxes like DSP System Toolbox, Communication System Toolbox and Signal Processing Toolbox for the simulation of the reception on Simulink. Filters, mathematic function, delay, product, FIR Decimation are the specific blocks present in the toolbox used. We also install an RTL-SDR external support package for the communication toolbox.
