Performance Analysis of Dual Link RF and RF - FSO Transmission System

The performance of a dual-link transmission system has been studied in this paper. The first path has a direct radio frequency (RF) link, whereas the second path has an identical and independent link of dual hop decode-and-forward (DF) based RF-free space optics (FSO) cooperative network. Rayleigh distribution is used to represent RF channels, whereas Gamma-Gamma (GG) distribution is used to represent FSO channel. The impact of maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity strategy on system performance is explored. To analyse the network, unified closed form expressions for outage probability (OP), and average bit error rate (ABER) are obtained in the form of Meijers-G function. Furthermore, novel expression for average channel capacity containing bivariate fox-H function is derived. In addition, the impact of turbulence severity, FSO detection algorithms, and the consequences of pointing error on system performance are investigated. Moreover to have more insight of system performance analytical results are validated by high signal to noise radio (SNR) asymptotic results.
