Electric Stress Control Using Field-Grading Material Rings on Polymeric Insulators

Recently, Field grading materials (FGM) have been finding many applications for electric stress control. This paper deals with the application of nonlinear FGM for controlling the electric stress along the polymeric insulator. Numerical simulations based on the finite element method (FEM) are performed for a 66 kV polymeric insulator. Here, FGM is used in the form of rings, which can be placed on insulators already in operation. Simulation results show effective stress control.
